Cpt. John L. Hallett III According to unit records, Hallett was commissioned June 2, 2001. He reported to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii on June 19, 2001 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, where he served as a rifle and scout platoon leader, company executive officer, and civil affairs officer. He deployed with the brigade in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Feb., 2005, serving 13-months in Iraq. After returning with the unit, in March, 2006, he was assigned to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he served as a platoon senior observer-controller. On Nov. 6, 2007, he reported to Fort Lewis, Wash., where he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, serving as a battalion personnel officer, assistant operations officer, and company commander. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July. Hallett's civilian and military education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (2001), Airborne qualification course (1999), Combat Diver qualification course (2000), Master Fitness Trainer Course (2001), Infantry Officer Basic Course (2001), Ranger qualification course (2002), Infantry Mortar Platoon Officer course (2002), Army Combatives Level I training (2002), Long Range Surveillance Leader course (2003), Infantry Maneuver Captains Career Course (2006), and the Joint Firepower Control Course (2006).

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Achievement Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and Scuba Diver Badge.


Captain John L. Hallett, III Resident of Concord Captain John Louis Hallett, III, 30 years old, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009, in Southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He served as Company Commander, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, WA. John was born July 6, 1979, in Los Angeles, CA. He was raised in Concord, CA. John graduated from St. Agnes School in 1993, De La Salle High School, in 1997, and the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2001. John is survived by his spouse Lisa Hallett, and their three children, Jackson, Bryce, and Heidi. John is also survived by his parents, John and Wendy Hallett, and his two brothers, Christopher and Thomas Hallett. Visitation will begin at 5:00pm, Friday, September 4, 2009 with the Vigil Service at 7:00pm at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 3966 Chestnut Avenue, Concord, CA 94519. Funeral Liturgy will be at 10am Saturday, September 5, 2009 at St. Agnes Church. Burial will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Lafayette following the Funeral Liturgy. A Memorial Fund has been set up.
