Corporal Robert William Hunt entered the U.S. Army from West Virginia and served in Troop C, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On February 28, 1968, he was the gunner on an M-41 tank on a reconnaissance-in-force mission in South Vietnam. During the mission, the tank commander stopped the M-41 near (GC) XT 742 017, in order to ask a local citizen for his identification card. While stopped, CPL Hunt was seen standing on the rear of the tank when the tank took two direct rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) hits. CPL Hunt could not be located following the attack, and due to the heavy fighting, the area was not searched until the position was regained the following day. Search teams found two other men killed in the incident but were unable to locate CPL Hunt or his remains. Further attempts to locate them were unsuccessful.
Following the incident, the Army promoted CPL Hunt to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG). Today, Master Sergeant Hunt is Memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed along with all his fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
