Sgt. Jerry Dewayne Carver was postumously promoted from Specialist 4th Class. He died in a night attack while his unit, A Troop 3/4 Cavalry was in a Cambodian excursion. I will try and find his citation for the Bronze Star he earned that night. He entered the Army in 1967, probably right around the time he turned 18. He may have taken BCT at Fort Benning, Georgia. As a 11E Armor Crewman he would have taken AIT at Fort Knox, KY. His last MOS was 11E10. His Service Number was RA 422661656. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and spent a year in College at Livingston State College. He was an assistant manager at a local Supermarket before entering the service. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His last address was his parents residence at 1602 Avenue E. Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His brother, James, survived him. His genealogy is listed below.
Father: Vivin Thomas Carver (1917 - 2007) Mother: Ida Dell Lenning (1920 - 1988) Grandfather: Ira Leslie Carver (1894 - 1961) Grandmother: Ethel Violet Odom (1892 - 1961) Great Grandfather: Asa Green Carver (1862 - 1933) Great Grandmother: Martha E. Keely (1866 - 1920) Maternal Grandfather: James Louis Lenning (1888 - 1952) Maternal Grandmother: Nellie Melvina Mayben (1896 - 1977)
The only citation I could find for his Bronze Star is from a homeown newspaper which partially quoted from it. "On 26 June 1970, while serving with ...the 4th Cavalry in the Republic of Cambodia ...an ememy force attempted to penetrate the A troop night defensive position perimeter. When Carver detected the enemy force he immediately alerted the unit. With complete disregard to his own safety, Sgt. Carver exposed himself to a hail of enemy fire as he engaged the hostiles. During the encounter, Sgt. Carver was fately wounded. His valorous actions ..." - He also recieved a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service.
Note from the Virtual Wall: (08 Jun 2000)
Jerry was my first cousin. He was older than me but I'll always remember him. I just want to give him the honor he earned while fighting for our freedom. There is not much information available on Jerry as his parents are also passed on, and I haven't been able to locate his brother, so if anuone can help me find out anything on him please email me.
Thank you so much,
