Final Mission of PFC John M. Filippelli

Posted on 7/15/17 - by wkillian@smjuhsd.org
On November 4, 1968, D Troop, the Air Cavalry troop of the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, encountered difficulty at 1835 hours when it landed its Aerorifles Platoon to check out a suspected enemy position one mile west of the Route 1 village of Bau Dieu in Hau Nghia Province, RVN. As the helicopters touched down, they came under heavy small arms fire which resulted in four cavalrymen killed. They included aero-riflemen PFC John M. Filippelli and SP4 Barney J. White, helicopter door gunner SP4 Gregory L. Phillips, and combat engineer SP4 Richard A. Setter. Another 12 were wounded. Two UH-1D helicopters were shot down and destroyed, and two others were damaged. Enemy losses in the fierce fight could not be determined. Filippelli was posthumously promoted to corporal. “You are Remembered”
Peace and condolence, to the family and friends. “He which hath no stomach, to this fight, let him depart. But we in it, shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers!! For he today, that sheds his blood with me, shall always be my brother.” Rest in peace brave soldier, you have not been forgotten. (W.Shakespeare) May God Bless you, for your Sacrifice!!!

NATIVE AMERICAN PRAYER
It is said a man hasn't died as long as he is remembered. This prayer is a way for families, friends and fellow veterans to remember our fallen brothers and sisters. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die
