Hoar worked for the Eastern Tool and Manufacturing Company of Belleville.

He entered the US Army on August 6, 1965, and trained at Fort Dix, NJ, before arriving in Vietnam on Christmas Day 1965.  Hoar was attached to Company B, 1st Cavalry Division (Airborne) and attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).

Hoar was killed in action on February 13, 1966, during a firefight at Bongson, 265 miles northeast of Saigon, South Vietnam.  He was fatally wounded in the head.
