The mission of the 234th Field Artillery Detachment is to maintain an airborne target acquisition detachment that is manned, equipped, and trained for rapid deployment by air, sea, or land to theaters of operation anywhere in the world to acquire and process targets in support of combat operations. On order, the unit redeploys, recovers, and reestablishes garrison operations. The 234th Field Artillery Detachment's history dates from 1951 when the unit was constituted and activated in the Regular Army as 34th Field Artillery Countermortar Radar Detachment. The unit spent its summer in the Republic of Korea Presidential unit citation, and was inactivated in October 1951 in Korea. The unit was activated and redesignated in 1965 as the 234th Artillery Detachment at Fort Bragg, NC, and was deployed to Republic of Vietnam when it participated in the Tet Counteroffensive and Tet 69 Counteroffensive where it earned two Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and two Republic of Vietnam Civil Action honor Medal, First Class.
